Is It Time to Replace Your Kitchen Cabinets?

by Samantha Rose

Quality kitchen cabinets can last up to 50 years, which means some homeowners keep the same cabinets for the entire time they own their home.

But if your cabinets are damaged or poorly built, keeping them that long may not be possible. Plus, age isn’t the only reason to replace your cabinets-replacing your kitchen cabinets can enhance your kitchen’s style, organization, and comfort.

Is it time to replace your kitchen cabinets? Ask yourself these questions.

1. Do Your Cabinets Have Functional Problems?

A poor cabinet structure and layout make it difficult for you to access the kitchen supplies you need. For example, maybe your cabinets are arranged so that two doors hit each other as they open, which means you can’t open either door all the way. Does your refrigerator doors open all the way?

Other functional issues can include cabinet doors that get stuck or make loud noises as they open. Also, look for cabinet drawers that don’t sit evenly with each other and with the floor. These problems could point
to a structural issue that requires replacement.

2. Do You Notice Water Damage?

Most cabinets get exposed to water at some point, but sometimes water can lead to serious damage. If you see any of these signs, it’s probably time to replace your cabinets:

  • Warping or bubbling
  • Color changes
  • Peeling lamination
  • Mold
  • Difficulty closing or opening
  • Soft interiors

Make sure you resolve the source of the water damage before you install new cabinets. Otherwise, the same problem will just recur with your new cabinets.

3. Do You Notice Any Other Types of Damage?

Water damage isn’t the only type of damage that can lead you to purchase new cabinets. Look closely at your cabinets for signs of wear and tear, like chips and scratches. Examine metal cabinets for signs of rust.
If you notice these types of damage, replacing your cabinets is the best course of action.

If your cabinets’ exterior is damaged but the interior is solid, you could consider refacing. Refacing experts install just new cabinet doors and drawer fronts and leave the internal cabinet structure, this is usually a very pricey option as most stock kitchen cabinet companies wont offer just the doors and drawers so you usually have to get them custom. But if the
interior is poorly constructed, you’ll need to replace the entire cabinet.

4. Do You Want to Change Your Kitchen Layout?

Perhaps the layout of your current cabinets doesn’t work for your family. Maybe you want more room to fit an island in your kitchen, which isn’t possible with your old cabinet arrangement. Or perhaps you want
cabinets of a different size and shape to better store your cooking supplies. Whatever the reason, talk to a cabinet installer about your desired kitchen design.

5. Do You Want to Increase Your Home’s Value?

Your cabinets may be perfectly functional, but that doesn’t mean you can’t replace them. Many homeowners decide to replace their cabinets to match the vision they have for their kitchen’s look and style. Consult
with a cabinet installer to choose cabinets that match your other kitchen features, such as your walls and flooring.

Along with increasing your personal satisfaction, replacing your cabinets can increase your home’s value. A kitchen with gorgeous new cabinets can quickly attract buyers. Make sure to choose a neutral color and style that’s appealing to a wide range of buyers, such as White or Ivory.

Replacing your kitchen cabinets can help you achieve the kitchen layout that you’ve always wanted. It can also give your kitchen a beautiful new look, which can both increase your satisfaction and attract future
