What To Expect During a Kitchen Remodel

by Samanth Rose

Remodeling your kitchen is a huge undertaking that involves lots of details, decisions, and careful planning. It helps to be aware of what to expect and to prepare for the unexpected before starting such a large exciting project.

Here are a few things to consider that will go a long way towards a successful kitchen project:

ESTABLISH A BUDGET

One of the biggest mistakes you can make during a kitchen remodel is not being open and honest with your designer regarding your budget.  Your budget needs to include everything you plan to include in the kitchen including cabinets, countertops, flooring, backsplash, lighting, appliances and hardware. Do not forget to budget for demolition and installation. It is also important to have a contingency fund for the unexpected, such as a pipe running through the wall you were planning to remove.

CREATE A WORKABLE PLAN

Proper planning will save you time, money and headaches.  The planning stage is where your designer will work with you to incorporate as many of the items on your wish list as possible and still stay within the budget. The more time you spend planning now will result in fewer hasty decisions made on the fly.  Those quick decisions can get expensive!

CHOOSE YOUR APPLIANCES THOUGHTFULLY

Your appliance selections can affect the overall layout of your kitchen, for example, wall ovens and a cooktop take up more space than a free-standing range.  Discuss your options with your designer before making any purchases.

ACCEPT THE MESS

Once the process begins, from demolition to installation, your house will be under construction.  You will be without running water and a sink for most of the project.  Be sure to set up a temporary kitchen and prepare meals in advance so that you won’t have to eat out every day.

BE PREPARED FOR THE UNEXPECTED

Be aware that there could unforeseen delays.  Out of stock materials or back-orders can occur; or discovering that pipe in the wall that now needs to be addressed, are all possibilities. Be sure to develop a good working relationship with your designer and installer and maintain constant communication so that everyone is aware and working towards a solution.

With careful planning, and by paying attention to the details your kitchen remodeling project will turn out headache free and within your budget.
